Contraceptive Pill for men limit sperm activity with no side effects

EP055, a non-hormonal male contraception was given to rhesus macaque monkeys in a research study conducted at the Oregon National Primate Research Centre. And the male pill was successful tested by scientists, and the best thing is that it does not have any side effects.

All the macaque monkeys recovered after 18 days with no side effects.

Michael O’Rand, the lead investigator stated that the male pill dwindles the ability of the sperm to fertilize.

Over the years, the only contraceptives available for men are condoms and vasectomy. However, scientists are hopeful that they can produce a new form of contraceptive for men in a span of 10 years.

There are also other contraceptives that have the potential to work, but like female contraceptives, these pills can affect the hormones because they deal primarily with the sperm production.

There was an injectable contraceptive for men that were created in 2016, but it was stopped because it comes with a high side effect. Less than half of the participants in the study developed acne, had mood disorders, and worst is around 5% of the male participants failed to recover their sperm count even after a year of injecting the male contraceptive.

There are other research studies as well, like JQ1 that had mice as test subjects. But it has not been tested on males yet, so they don’t know yet if there will be fertility issues.

Another study dwells on ouabain, which is a substance used to poison the arrows of hunters. African hunters are using this in their hunt, as well as chemicals from plants and mangoes.

The clinical trial for the first contraceptive gel to lessen sperm count will last for four years.
