France passes law to ban all oil and gas production by 2040

A new law has been passed by France's parliament banning all exploration and production of oil and natural gas by 2040.

New exploration licenses will not be granted and no existing drilling permits will be renewed.

"Very proud that France has become the first country in the world today to ban any new oil exploration licenses with immediate effect and all oil extraction by 2040," Emmanuel Macron, the French President, said on Twitter.

  1. Yes, those 16418bpd of domestic production will be hard to say good bye too, but by 2040, will there even be anything left to cut? Shrewdly setting environmental standards no one else will be able to meet, why not just announce peak oil?
