Central American Women Crossing U.S. Border Are Raped 80 Percent Of The Time

This is a difficult article to read and if you do not want to read anything on sexual abuse, skip over to the next article.  There is a human rights crisis that is taking place on the border of Mexico and the United States and it’s about rape.  Approximately 80% of all women and young girls who cross the border illegally to get into the USA, are raped during their crossing.

The price to freedom is high for women and children.  Because these women are coming into the USA illegally, they cannot get help.  Crimes are committed and the criminals, namely rapists, know that women are helpless to do anything.  They know they can literally get away with rape.

Many women and children land up in migrant shelters.  They are coming from Central America, via Mexico, into the USA, and they go through more than one nightmare crossing.  Crossing into the USA as an illegal migrant is difficult enough, without having to worry about sexual abuse.

In 2010, Amnesty put the rape numbers at 60%.  That is a staggeringly high number.  Now, 2018, the numbers have grown by 20%. Men are behaving with impunity.  They know they are not going to be reported.  The sexual violence takes place by criminal gangs, human traffickers, corrupt police or border officials and their own smugglers.  

Women cross with their children - girls and boys, and boys are not immune to rape either - but sometimes children cross on their own.  Figures say that approximately 70 thousand unaccompanied minors enter the USA every year, illegally.  These children, from all parts of Central America, hardly ever report their abuse.  While women and children deserve protection, no matter the circumstances, they are certainly not getting it while crossing into the USA.  The figures of sexual abuse have never been higher.
