Calling Millenials snowflakes may be funny but they find it very unfair!

If you haven't heard the term ‘Snowflake’ or ‘Generation Snowflake’ then you may well be from another planet. The term has become somewhat derogatory and is a term used to characterize the youth of today, referring to them as being a little soft, a little flakey and a little over sensitive.

Many millennials find this terminology deeply unfair and also mentally damaging. In fact, Millennials pride themselves on being in touch with who they are, in touch with their feelings and proud of the fact that they are sensitive. They feel compared to previous generations, they are much more communicative, emotionally strong and emotionally aware.

So how does a Millennial feel when you call them a snowflake? Well, according to a study done by Aviva Health Insurance in the UK, over fifty percent of them say it is deeply unfair and damaging. They feel they have an image of being ‘weak’ and ‘unable to cope.’ The truth is that Millennials cope in a way that is much different to the way previous generations have coped. They are not scared to show their vulnerable sides, they are not scared to show their feminine or masculine sides, or both, and they are not scared to say how they feel.

Does this make Millennials weak? We don’t think so at all, quite the opposite. We applaud Millennials for saying things as they are. We applaud them for their honesty and their vulnerability and we don’t applaud anyone for creating a stereotype. Calling a generation by a ‘derogatory term’ can indeed be insulting and result in the generation feeling inadequate. Calling Millennials ‘snowflakes’ is insulting and damaging and a form of bullying.

Nobody deserves to be stereotyped, least of all our Millennials. The world today is harder than it’s been for many generations. Let’s rather support one another!
