Facebook admits social media can pose threat to mental health

Facebook has admitted its online platform could be bad for your mental health.

The tech media giant admitted in a blog post that people who spend time "passively consuming information" often "feel worse".

The company blog post reads: “Though the causes aren’t clear, researchers hypothesise that reading about others online might lead to negative social comparison - and perhaps even more so than offline, since people’s posts are often more curated and flattering.

"Another theory is that the internet takes people away from social engagement in person.”

The admission in the blog post came after a former executive claimed Facebook was "ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.”

Chamath Palihapitiya, former vice-president for growth slammed the corporation saying: “The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works. No civil discourse, no cooperation, misinformation, mistruth.
