All Dutch Trains Now Run on 100% Wind Power

All public transport trains in the Netherlands will run completely on renewable energy as of January 1 this year. The project to run the trains on renewables was expected to be completed in 2018 but it got finished 1 year earlier.

With a total of 2,200 wind turbines across the country, the Netherlands now produces enough wind energy to power 2.4 million households.

The project was completed with the partnership of NS, one of the Netherlands’ largest railway companies and Eneco, a Dutch sustainable energy supplier.

 Eneco account manager Michel Kerkhof said, “What makes this contract and partnership unique is that a whole sector decreases its CO2 footprint enormously and sets an example for other sectors to follow.”

 The NS electric trains alone use about 1.2 billion kWh of electricity a year, which is roughly the total power consumption of every home in the country’s largest city, Amsterdam. So basically, the electricity to power the dutch trains will come from the farms in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Finland
